Lisa

Leveling up her fitness after avoiding hip surgery.

Lisa’s hip pain started after doing the TACP 24 Hour Challenge; a team race where you run as many miles as you can in 24 hours. She wasn’t planning on going all out, but the spirit of competition kicked in, ended she ended up running 28 miles, followed by a 5K. As the pain got worse and started interfering with her running and workouts, she went to see several doctors. They said to stop running and gave her pills for the pain. Being active her whole life, and actually enjoying running, this wasn’t really an option for her. She had an MRI done, and the diagnosis was Labral tear. So they said she’d need surgery.

Everyone she knew that had gotten a surgery, had issues afterward. The recovery time was long, and she had to stay on the move being a realtor, having two kids, volunteering, and her husband being stationed overseas. Not only that, there was no guarantee that she’d be able to run the way she wanted to. So surgery was out.

She continued pushing through the pain until she met Dr. Lily at her CrossFit gym. Lily explained how a lot of surgeries that people are being offered are actually unnecessary, and that it was actually possible to be pain free and run again without the surgery. This was exactly what Lisa was looking for.

After her program, Lisa’s hip has been completely pain free, even while running more (and with a weighted vest), doing more complex movements in CrossFit, and lifting heavier weights. As a bonus, they also worked on her shoulder issues (from an old car accident) and migraines.

Often times, aches and pains are attributed to age or diagnoses that supposedly require surgery, but Lisa is a prime example of what happens when you combine the desire to conquer pain, an open mind, and a skilled team that cares.
