Six Reasons Stuff Hasn’t Worked

It’s really not that hard to get temporary pain relief. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of options out there. There’s the DIY classics of foam rolling, stretching, massage gunning, resting, and asking the Internet for random exercises. Then there’s the plethora of places offering to massage, crack, stretch, freeze, inject, laser, zap, cut, and medicate it.

But if the pain keeps coming back, then the core issues obviously haven’t been addressed. It’s not because there isn’t a real solution. It’s partly that the healthcare system is designed largely for one thing: profits for a few companies with massive lobbying power. This has greatly contributed to a lack of accountability and long-term results. As such, things like these six reasons are commonplace, so common that they seem normal.

1. You've been misdiagnosed

Of our clients that have already seen doctor or gotten an MRI, about half have been misdiagnosed: The doctors told them they have something that they don’t actually have, or they blame the pain on the wrong thing.

How are you supposed to fix something when you don’t even know what the problem actually is.

2. They're cookie-cutter

Health insurance incentivizes quantity over quality, leading to high-volume, generic, and impersonal care. Quality doesn’t matter; the providers get paid by insurance so long as the paperwork is filled out correctly, even if the treatment doesn’t work.

When someone’s job is really to keep insurance companies happy, it’s going to be harder to deliver results for patients

3. They want you coming back

For some providers, the business model itself is based on scaring or misinforming patients into coming back indefinitely for the same issue. Solving the pain or injury long-term would actually break their business.

While subscriptions make sense for things like magazines, we don’t think that pain should be a subscription.

4. They're narrow or outdated

Some doctors are experts at their narrow scope of practice, but are not aware of the possibilities that exist outside of that. They also might’ve studied decades ago and have not kept up to date with the latest research.

As they say: If your only tool is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail.

Two friends at the gym were talking about an injury one of them has. He had asked his doctor if it would ever heal, to which the doctor replied, “Are you ever going to stop moving? Because so long as you’re moving it’s not going to heal.” That’s the opposite advice that this person should be getting, but unfortunately, it’s not the first (or last) time we’ve heard doctors say things like this.

5. They're basic

Their treatment might work to get back to daily tasks like walking or putting on clothes, but it’s not designed to help with higher-level activities like running, lifting, or playing sports.

If they don’t have a proper gym space and equipment, you’re probably at the wrong place.

6. They're just not very good at what they do

As in any industry, some people are better at their profession than others, even with degrees and certifications. As well-intentioned as they may be, it’s possible that they’re just not very good at what they do.

Time and certifications alone are not an indicator of competence. Consistent results over time are.

The Ninja Way

Believe it or not, MRIs are not very useful when it comes to diagnosing musculoskeletal pain. We do a thorough evaluation and can determine what’s going on through your symptoms, history, and a series of physical tests. Check out the Ninja Guide to MRIs for more info on how ineffective scans are for diagnosing musculoskeletal issues are and why they’re overused.
